July is UV Safety Awareness Month but protecting yourself from the sun is a year-round job. The skin is the body’s largest organ and provides protection against heat, injury and infection. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun and artificial sources like tanning beds can damage the skin and eyes and increase your risk for cancer.

Some exposure to the sun is good for your well-being and essential for Vitamin D production, but in the summer months, 5-15 minutes two to three times a week is enough. Follow these simple tips to protect yourself outdoors whether working or having fun in the sun.

  • Wear protective clothing that covers the arms and legs.
  • Stay in the shade especially during peak hours between 10 am and 4 pm.
  • Apply broad spectrum sunscreen with a SPF value of at least 30 to all exposed areas and reapply every 2 hours.
  • Protect your head, face, eyes and ears with a wide-brimmed hat and wraparound sunglasses.
  • Use extra caution near reflective surfaces like water, sand and snow and at higher altitudes.
