March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Routine screenings like colonoscopies can prevent colorectal cancer and help detect abnormalities early, giving the best chance for successful treatment. Colonoscopies are recommended for adults at average risk and without symptoms starting at age 50. Risk factors include age, gender, race, and family history.

In addition to getting the recommended screening, you can also lower your risk of colorectal cancer with these healthy lifestyle choices:

  • Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
  • Limit intake of red meat and processed meat.
  • Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all.
  • Stop smoking.
  • Exercise most days of the week.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.

Don’t put off this potentially life-saving test. Talk to your healthcare provider about your risks and screening options today.
