Holiday Nutrition

The holidays are upon us! While they may look different this year, you can still use the time to focus on you. During the holiday season, many people tend to eat more than they typically do with the justification that the new year is right around the corner and they can start over with their diet then. But if you’re trying to focus on staying healthy during the holidays, you have a lot of decisions to make about what you’ll eat. By following these holiday nutrition tips for wellness, you can stay on track for your overall wellbeing.

Choose Lean Proteins

Many of the holiday meals feature some kind protein as the main part of the meal. Protein is an essential part of your diet, but you’ll want to choose lean protein. Try to avoid fatty pieces of meat and gravy or sauces that may have a high sodium level.

Don’t Skip Meals

Skipping meals is never a good idea, especially on a holiday. Many people think skipping a meal will allow them to eat more when it comes to the meal. This causes people to eat more, which leaves them feeling unsatisfied after the meal is done. Instead, have small snacks throughout the day to tide you and your stomach over until the meal starts.

Add Color to Your Plate

Depending on your meal, you may have lots of options to add to your plate. Try to choose a variety of colors with your food options. The more fruits and veggies you have on your plate, the healthier choices you make.

Don’t Feel Guilty

If you want to have a few desserts during the holidays, don’t feel guilty. That guilty feeling will negatively impact your overall wellbeing as the day progresses. If you do choose to have a few more desserts than normal, counteract it with some exercise or healthier choices during the meal.

Take a Walk

Just because it’s the holidays doesn’t mean your exercise plan should go out the window. Instead, suggest a break in between dinner and dessert to take a walk. It gives your body a chance to start digesting the meal you ate while giving you a chance to get a little exercise to keep you on track.

Make Good Drink Choices

During holiday dinners, you may have many different drink options. If you plan on eating more desserts than you normally do, you’ll want to eliminate calories from somewhere else. The drinks you have can also contribute to a calorie count. Instead of alcohol, choose water with slices of fruit to add more flavor. If you do choose to have wine, beer, or something else, have water in between each drinks.

When it comes to holiday nutrition, you have options to enjoy your favorites without going overboard. Remember, you can have a cheat day from time to time without breaking your diet.
